Making Sure They Are Not Cheating

I have been a teacher for nearly 20 years. For as much as some things change, other things just do not. One of the things that don’t change are the students who try to take shortcuts when completing their homework. I have each student write several essays each school year, and it is a large chunk of their final grade. I understand some people are born writers, and some struggle with it mightily. That is why I don’t grade based purely on content but on determination as well. I also use a plagiarism checker because there are some students who just take the easy way out.

What they don’t realize is that I am able to tell when they turn in something they did not write for the most part. I also am able to tell when it is blatantly copied from another piece of work, even if I cannot say where it came from. I knew that I would need to have proof though if I accused one of my students of not writing their own essays, and that is why I decided to find a plagiarism checker in the first place.

I looked at quite a few different ones online, and i was not able to find one that I was happy with. I finally decided that I would need to pay for one, which I had the budget to do so. I immediately was able to find the one that I wanted to use when I decided to look at them this way. I ran one of my student’s essays through it, and I was both happy and sad with the results. I was happy because my suspicions were proven to be true. I was sad because I knew that my student needed to face the consequences. My students know I use this now, so I am finding that not as many are trying to cheat the system now.
